Maps

Our Geographic Information System (GIS) department has developed a number of maps which we have made available as below. The data within these maps are specific to Esmeralda County and show the various geographic details as well as where the proposed rail and highway corridors intersect Esmeralda County. These corridors have been designated as the preferred routes for construction and operation of a rail system for transporting shipments of spent nuclear fuel, high-level radioactive waste, and materials to Yucca Mountain, Nevada. You can find more information regarding the details of this rail line on our transportation page.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has analyzed the potential impacts of railroad construction and operation along common segments and alternative segments within the Caliente and Mina rail corridors. The Rail Alignment EIS (DOE/EIS-0369) The Caliente corridor, the preferred route, intersects Esmeralda on the eastern border near highway 95 and are shown on all the maps in yellow. If you would like to order a map, please click here and state within the email, which map(s) you are interested in and the details of your request.

Note: The following maps are viewable in jpg format and printable in PDF or portable document format.

Aquifer Type

Developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, these data show the Esmeralda County portion of the shallowest principal aquifers of the conterminous United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The original maps were maps published at a scale of 1:2,500,000 and were printed in the 2003 series "Ground Water Atlas of the United States".

Hydrographic Basins

Map Data Source and Description
Developed by the Nevada Division of Water
Resources, these hydrographic basin boundaries
are reviewed by and filed with the Nevada State
Engineer. These boundaries assist staff of the
Nevada Division of Water Resources and the
public with identifying in which hydrographic basin
an application to appropriate groundwater is located.

Earthquake Fault Line

Map Data Source and Description
These faults are a component of the composite
Digital Geologic Map of Nevada created by the
Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG).
The original county reports with 1:250,000 scale
geologic maps were published by the NBMG as
a series of Bulletins from 1961 to 1987. The data
in this 2006 Fault Line shape file has not been
edited from the original data in NBMG OFR 97-1

Federal Lands

Map Data Source and Description
This map layer was produced in 2005 by the USGS for the National Atlas of the United States, and consists of federally owned or administered lands of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Only areas of 640 acres or more are included. There may be private in holdings within
the boundaries of Federal lands in this map layer.

Geologic Area

Map Data Source and Description
This 2007 USGS layer was compiled and modified
from digitized versions of 1:250,000-scale Nevada
county geologic bulletins published by the Nevada
Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) between
1961 and 1987. This new regional geologic
interpretation of geologic units and related short
descriptions utilizes linear features of faults and
contacts with new geologic and tectonic ideas.

Herd Management Area

Map Data Source and Description
Created in 2001 by the BLM, these data represent
the Esmeralda County portion of the Wild Horse
and Burro Herd Management Areas (HMA's) in the
State of Nevada. This map is intended to be used
for reference regarding the names, locations, and
sizes of the Wild Horse and Burro Herd
Management Areas.

BLM Land Disposal

Map Data Source and Description
This data represents the lands administered by
the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in
Nevada that have been identified as suitable to
be considered for disposal. This represents the
location of public lands identified for exchange
or disposal (as of 2005) and is intended to be
used for reference only, and not for determination
of land ownership.

Historic Mines and Prospects

Map Data Source and Description
Produced by the Nevada Bureau of Mines
and Geology (NBMG) in 2005, the Nevada
Abandoned Mines Database Compilation
Update compiled and updated existing digital
data sets containing information and location
data on mine and prospect sites throughout
the State of Nevada.

National Wetlands Inventory

Map Data Source and Description
The National Wetlands Inventory is a national
data set created by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service on USGS 1:24,000 topographic maps
depicting extent, approximate location and type
of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the
conterminous United States.

Precipitation Map

Map Data Source and Description
This layer represents average monthly and annual
precipitation for the climatological period 1961-90.
Average precipitation is estimated from an analytical
model that uses point data and a digital elevation
model (DEM) to generate grided estimates of
annual, monthly and event-based climatic parameters.
Developed in 1998 by the Oregon Climate Service
at Oregon State University, the Esmeralda County
portion was extracted from a national map.

Soils Map

Map Data Source and Description

Map Data Source and Description
Developed by the Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) in 1994, this map depicts information
about soil features on or near the surface of the Earth.
Map units were generalized from more detailed soil
survey maps where available. Land Remote Sensing
Satellite (LANDSAT) imagery and other data were
used to estimate soil units where detailed soil surveys
were not available.

Land Stewardship Map

Map Data Source and Description
This 2005 stewardship map was developed
by New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife
Research Unit as a component of the USGS
National Gap Analysis for the purpose of land
management. Intended for use at a scale of
1:100,000 or greater, the stewardship map
identifies ownership for conservation purposes.
