After 30 years and 9 billion dollars' worth of federal research, Yucca Mountain is one of the most intensely studied pieces of real estate in the world. But the Nevada landmark — the proposed site of a national geological repository for high-level nuclear waste — remains shrouded in controversy. In a new report, two experts admit that scientists cannot answer every question about the site's future security. Still, they say, it is time to move forward and build a carefully-monitored facility.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has submitted an application to build the country’s first long-term geologic spent fuel repository. The DoE began studying Yucca Mountain as a potential site for a long-term repository for spent fuel and high-level waste in 1978. Three decades on, on 6 June 2008, it filed a construction application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build a geologic repository for spent fuel and high-level radioactive waste at the site in the Nevada desert 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The US Court of Federal Claims has awarded Progress Energy $82.8 million to cover used fuel management costs incurred as a result of the government's failure to provide used fuel management. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded up to $13.8 million in contracts for waste storage canisters for the long-awaited repository for used fuel at Yucca Mountain. Legal rulings on low-level and ex-military waste have also been made in Washington and Texas.
