Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management- Mission is to manage and dispose of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in a manner that protects health, safety and the environment; enhances national and energy security; and merits public confidence.

Yucca Mountain Program at Lawrence Berkeley (ESD) - The role of Berkely Lab Eearth Science Division's (ESD) Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) is to assist the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States, and other countries in achieving the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste-by means of high-quality scientific analyses that encompass modeling, laboratory and field experiments, and technology development.

Yucca Mountain Program at Lawrence Livermore (National Laboratory LLNL) - Although LLNL involvement in the Yucca Mountain Project dates to 1977, current focus is on developing a system of engineered barriers surrounded by natural barriers to contain the highly radioactive waste. Because little is known about how modern materials, placed in a geological site and subjected to initially high temperatures and radiation, will behave during such time periods, much of LLNL's development work is based on predictive models and accelerated age testing of materials and systems.

Yucca Mountain Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory - The characterization of Yucca Mountain has progressed for more than 20 years with Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists leading many efforts related to radionuclide transport by water away from the repository.

State of Nevada Nuclear Waste Project Office - The mission of the Nevada Agency for Nuclear Projects is to assure that the health, safety, and welfare of Nevada's citizens and the State's unique environment and economy are adequately protected with regard to any federal high-level nuclear waste disposal activities in the State.

The U.S. Department of Transportation - Regulates the routing of highly radioactive materials, including spent nuclear fuel.

The Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board - Congress created the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, an independent federal agency, to evaluate the technical and scientific validity of Project studies and findings. Twice a year, this Board reports its conclusions and recommendations to Congress and to the Secretary of Energy and points out concerns from outside parties.

Office of Nuclear Energy, Science & Technology - The mission of the Office of Nuclear Energy is to lead the DOE investment in the development and exploration of advanced nuclear science and technology.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission - The NRC is one of three Federal agencies under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act with a role in the disposal of spent nuclear fuel and other high-level radioactive waste. NRC has responsibility for developing regulations to implement the EPA safety standards and for licensing the repository.

On-site Representatives High-Level Waste Management Office in Las Vegas, Nevada maintains information associated with the potential high-level radioactive waste geologic repository at Yucca Mountain.

Department of Energy (DOE) has the responsibility for developing permanent disposal capacity for spent fuel and other high-level radioactive waste.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has responsibility for developing environmental standards to evaluate the safety of a geologic repository and establishes radiation protection standards for the protection of the public from the activities associated with the disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

Committee on High-Level Radioactive Waste (NRS 459.0085) - The committee is charged with legislative oversight responsibilities to study and evaluate: information and policies regarding the location in the state of Nevada for a facility for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste, any potentially adverse effects from the construction and operation of a facility, and ways of mitigating those effects, other policies relating to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste, and appropriate legislation recommended to the Legislature and the Legislative Commission.

Western Interstate Energy Board - The Western Interstate Energy Board is an organization of 12 western states and three western Canadian provinces, which are associate members of the Board. The governor of each state appoints a member to the Board. The legal basis of the Board is the Western Interstate Nuclear Compact (Public Law 91-461). The Compact provides for the President of the United States to appoint an ex-officio member to the Board.

Transportation External Coordination Working Group - TEC was formed in 1992 to improve coordination between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and external groups interested in the Department's transportation activities. TEC is co-chaired by DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management and the Office of Environmental Management.

US Department of Transportation - Top priorities at DOT are to keep the traveling public safe and secure, increase their mobility, and have US transportation system contribute to the nation's economic growth.

Transportation of Spent Nuclear Fuel - Spent nuclear fuel refers to uranium-bearing fuel elements that have been used at commercial nuclear reactors and that are no longer producing enough energy to sustain a nuclear reaction. Once the spent fuel is removed from the reactor the fission process has stopped, but the spent fuel assemblies still generate significant amounts of radiation and heat. Because of the residual hazard, spent fuel must be shipped in containers or casks that shield and contain the radioactivity and dissipate the heat.

US DOE - Carlsbad, New Mexico Waste Isolation Pilot Program - The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP, is the world's first underground repository licensed to safely and permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste left from the research and production of nuclear weapons.

Nuclear Energy Institute - The purpose of the Institute is to foster and encourage the continued safe utilization and development of nuclear energy to meet the nation’s energy, environmental and economic goals and to support the nuclear energy industry.
